Active Supervision: Parents should always supervise and accompany children while
tobogganing and sledding. Teach children to toboggan/sled down the middle of hill and use
sides to walk to the top.

Safety: Make sure children wear a helmet (hockey or ski helmet) to prevent head injuries.
Choose a Toboggan/sled that is sturdy and easy to control. Also check that the toboggan /
sled is in good condition. Remind children to sit on a toboggan / sled facing forward. As they
are going down the hill, children should avoid lying on their stomach and sledding head first.

Hill: Choose a hill with a gentle slope. Make sure there is enough room to stop and the hill is
free of any objects such as trees or rocks that could be a hazard.  It is best to use the hill when
it is daylight or when the hill is well lit so children can see all potential dangers and can also be
seen by others. Always discourage any jumping in front of toboggans / sleds going down hill
and make sure only recommended number of children ride toboggan / sled.

Clothes: Dress children in warm layers of brightly coloured clothes. Use a neck warmer instead
of a scarf, and cover children’s head, ears and hands. Children should wear waterproof clothes
and boots.

TOBOGGANING AND SLEDDING SAFETY
Tobogganing and sledding are fun and popular winter activities enjoyed by children and
parents alike. However each year hundreds of children are injured and many require
medical attention due to falls, with most injuries happening when a child collides with an
object or is thrown from the toboggan or sled.  Fortunately, most of these injuries are
preventable.  Here are some tips to help children stay safe:
